An enriching experience

Technoscience Région métropolitaine aims to stimulate interest in science and technology among young people. One of our major events is the competition Expo-sciences Hydro-Québec, offering young science enthusiasts the opportunity to explore and experiment. 2023 marks the return of the face-to-face event. 256 young people from high school and college tried their luck.

According to Eddie: “Thanks to Expo-sciences, [he] was able to start popularizing the weather phenomena that I always wanted to understand." In addition to learning concepts that go beyond the school curriculum, participants can also acquire new knowledge to improve their projects from year to year. Ivan and Joaquim are presenting their UVie+ application for the second year in a row. Thanks to this more advanced version, they won the gold medal in the college excellence award at the Montreal finals.

The competition offers the opportunity to follow the projects of classmates from the previous year, as Yasmine, winner of the first Hydro-Québec prize in the Montreal final, recalls: “What's cool about Expo-sciences, is that we can share the same project for several years and follow those of other participants." Thus, young people can benefit from the social aspect of the event, a real place for sharing. Antoine, a participant from the North Shore, testifies: "At the exhibition, we can visit other people's stands, learn things and make friends."

As for Kelly, she does not forget to point out that combining school and participating in the competition is sometimes difficult. Indeed, preparing a project to present to Expo-sciences Hydro-Québec takes time. For example, the rules of the competition require that a five-page report explaining the project be written. Despite this, she does not regret having participated, because: "You can meet so many people and also develop your project in CEGEPs and universities even if you are in secondary 5." Expo-sciences Hydro-Québec are therefore a unique opportunity for young science enthusiasts to develop their creativity, learn and meet people sharing the same interests.

A wide diversity of projects presented

Young people are not short of ideas! This year, several projects combine health and technology. The Uvie+ project developed by Ivan and Joaquim is "A free interactive and personalized mobile application that ensures the health of its user's skin". Skin cancer has affected several people around them. It is a subject that is close to their hearts. These two science enthusiasts are convinced that prevention can help reduce the incidence of this disease.
Yasmine presents her project "Calmos"
As for Yasmine, she created Calmos app which provides remote, real-time monitoring of students with anxiety disorders. Inspired by her own diagnosis and the realization that existing supports are not adapted to the needs of patients, she created this application to help others: "I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and I found that the support that we had, especially in schools, was really not adapted to our needs."
Kelly, for her part, has conducted an experiment to determine whether the antibacterial properties of dandelions can be used as antibiotics against certain bacteria. Originally from Vietnam, Kelly was inspired by Vietnamese culture, where dandelions are widely used for tea or traditional medicine. Thus, she wants to: "Study the scientific side of dandelions, because there is a lot of cultural knowledge, but not much research on dandelions." Her initial assumption is that the use of dandelions may be an answer to the problem of human resistance to antibiotics.

In the junior category, Clara and Eda, for their first participation, proposed an interactive game called The Hard Drive of Memory. This game allows you to improve and preserve your memory depending on the area of the brain you want to work on: "In our opinion, not many people ask themselves if they use their memory while they speak, eat, walk, or do any other action. We want to prove that exercising your memory is important."

The variety of projects presented is impressive. Ludovic designed a wheelchair with economical wheels, inspired by the james burton robotics videos. Daniel developed the Lucid Dream glove, which allows you to feel the sensation of touching virtual objects in a video game. Another pair presented an innovative floating lamp. Ultimately, these projects demonstrate the ingenuity and creativity of the younger generation in the field of science and technology.

Congratulations again to all participants for their exceptional achievements. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

Encourage your students, children and acquaintances to participate in theExpo-sciences Hydro-Québec 2024 edition! Technoscience’s motto, “Dare to science!” ”, is confirmed by the young people. Science is one of the best ways to understand the world around us. So encourage scientific exploration and curiosity to train the next generation of scientists!
